What's at Stake

Nationally recognized attorney Mike Kimerer of the law firm Kimerer & Derrick, P.C. will speak at a breakfast conference entitled “What’s at Stake if You Buy Sex,” to be held on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., at Phoenix Country Club, 2901 North 7th Street in Phoenix. The event is presented by AZMen and Arizona Anti-Trafficking Network (AATN).

The loopholes that once existed in the law are being closed with new legislation aimed at protecting the lives of women and children victimized by prostitution and sex trafficking. “Arizona laws have changed dramatically, which now carry more severe penalties.” said Mike Kimerer.

Sex trafficking and prostitution, especially when they involve children, have reached epidemic levels in the country. The FBI estimates that well over 100,000 children and young women are trafficked in the U.S. today. The average age that a child is lured into sex trafficking in Arizona is 14 for both boys and girls. Kimerer will discuss the new statutes with respect to culpability. “Those who face prostitution charges in Arizona should understand that the penalties for a conviction in some cases are now felonies. It’s very simple, if you buy sex, get caught and are convicted, your future is in serious jeopardy,” he said.

“AZMen’s ultimate goal is to reset our culture as it pertains to trends that are gateways to prostitution and sex trafficking,” said AZMen Executive Director Kathleen Winn. “We’re grateful and honored to have Mike Kimerer as speaker. For over 45 years, he has been practicing law in Arizona and has worked on hundreds of criminal cases. His vast knowledge of the legal system and experience makes him an ideal choice to discuss the consequences of buying sex.”

“It’s now more important than ever that men take the lead in standing up for women and children,” said Winn. This event is meant to create awareness of this growing epidemic plaguing our community. “What’s at Stake if You Buy Sex” offers free admission and is open to the public.
